How Is Counseling Children and Teens Different from Adults?

How Is Counseling Children and Teens Different from Adults?

A child therapist connects with younger children by getting on their level. This may mean getting on the floor with them for play therapy, engaging the child in guided conversation while coloring, or completing therapeutic worksheets. Our counselors and coaches understand that children are not simply miniature adults, even if they sometimes struggle with adult-sized problems. We will work to build rapport, understand their perspective, and help guide them toward emotional wholeness.

In teen therapy, building that rapport is especially important. As teens mature, we can shift more toward traditional counseling techniques, but it starts with making them feel comfortable in opening up. We also make sure the context of the session is relevant to their perspective and the issues they are facing. Having the right teen therapist in Raleigh – one with the communication and relational skills to effectively work with adolescents – can make all the difference in the therapeutic process.

What Parents Can Expect

We take a collaborative approach with parents during their child’s therapy. In the first session, the provider will typically spend about half of the time with the parent and the other with just the child. As the child gets comfortable with the process, this normally shifts so that the majority of the provider’s time is spent with the child with a debrief for the parents at the end of the session.
Depending on the child’s age and comfort level, the provider may begin regularly meeting with the child alone and only meeting with the parents as needed. In addition to working with the child, we coach you as the parent on how to manage the issues at home and help reinforce their progress.

We know that parents are a child’s greatest ally and we want to work with you to achieve the best possible outcomes for your entire family. For children age 17 and younger, we are happy to discuss your child’s progress, answer questions, and keep you informed of all relevant updates. However, once your child turns 18 they are legally an adult, and we are required by law to treat
them as an adult client. We are required to maintain strict confidentiality with all clients 18 and over, even if a parent is paying for the session for an adult child.
